We are just about ready to close the books on the 2023 season but before we do that, we’ve got to have a bit of a catch-up on what’s been going on towards the end of it.

Firstly, we retained the War Of The Roses trophy with a 9-3 victory over the Sheffield Ice Tigers on 22nd July. The game saw two significant milestones achieved by Buccaneers players. After 17 games spanning 4 seasons, Luke Jiggins finally bagged his first competitive goal for the club. It’s been a long time coming but it’s thoroughly deserved and the reaction from the bench said it all. Then, club captain Michael Walsh recorded his 100th goal for the club in his 94th game.

Next on the agenda is the club saying goodbye to someone who’s made a great contribution over the last few years.

Glen Rattray joined us in 2017 and has been an absolute rock in between the pipes in the 32 games he’s donned the Buccs jersey. After representing his native South Africa at 5 World Championships, his wealth of experience proved invaluable to the team. He quickly became a well-respected voice within the changing room and was always on hand to provide words of advice whether that be to individual players or the team as a whole.

We also can’t talk about Glen without mentioning his first game as an out-skater. The team were short and in typical fashion, Glen stepped up to take a spot on the left wing. After plenty of mocking of our forwards inability to hit the net over the years in training, Glen showed us how it was done and notched his first goal in his first game.

A career move is taking Glen to Dubai so whilst his time with the Buccaneers is over for now, the door will always be open. We thank Glen for his contribution on and off the ice over the last 6 years.
